Mizuhiki is a traditional Japanese craft — twisted washi paper cord, shaped and knotted into intricate forms. It is said to carry the power to connect people, ward off negative energy, and bring good luck.
In our collection, we mainly celebrate the Ume-musubi, a knot inspired by the delicate plum blossom, alongside other traditional forms.
The word totoi means something precious that deserves care. We make each piece slowly and carefully by hand. No two pieces are ever the same.
Safe for Sensitive Skin
Because we want you to feel safe enjoying a piece of Japanese tradition in your everyday life — and gift it to someone dear, with confidence.

We are a small handmade brand based in Japan — two women, crafting each piece with care and intention.
We take this ancient tradition and reinterpret it into wearable, everyday pieces. Every piece is made slowly by hand — which means no two are exactly alike.
We hope each item carries a little bit of that care with it — and perhaps, a small connection between us.

The metal components that come into direct contact with your skin — such as earring posts and ring bases — are made from surgical stainless steel. Mizuhiki is also incredibly lightweight, making it a perfect choice for earrings.
Kind to sensitive skin, and easy to gift with confidence.
Mizuhiki is made from traditional Japanese washi paper cord. To keep your pieces beautiful:
Each piece is handmade and unique. Small variations in color and shape are natural and part of the craft.
Please note: Our items contain small parts. Keep out of reach of small children and pets.
For over 1,400 years, mizuhiki has adorned gifts and ceremonial offerings across Japan. Once tied, the knot never comes undone — carrying with it a quiet wish for lasting bonds, good fortune, and protection. At totoi japan, we are drawn to the Ume-musubi — a knot said to strengthen bonds, ward off negative energy, and invite better fortune into one's life.
Yes! We love creating custom mizuhiki pieces. Send us a DM on Instagram with your ideas, preferred colors, and occasion. Custom orders typically take 2-3 weeks.
We also offer special gift wrapping for an additional $4. Your item will be wrapped in beautiful Japanese-themed paper, tied with a mizuhiki cord, and placed in an organza pouch — ready to give as a gift. Simply select "Gift wrapping" option.
No — totoi is a small independent studio, and each piece is made individually by hand. We do not offer bulk orders or wholesale at this time.
